This blissful holiday is based in the heart of the pretty harbour town of Oban and takes in some of Scotland’s most glorious scenery. Oban bustles with life and its harbour is busy with boats setting sail for the islands. The town boasts a level esplanade and whisky distillery as well as Pulpit Hill where you can experience stunning views across the Firth of Lorne, not to mention a tranquil Highland sunset. We make the most of our time with outings to colourful Inveraray, the sleepy settlement of Glencoe, a visit to the Ben Nevis distillery and we discover the beauty of the Isle of Mull.
Day 1: Following your home taxi collection, we make our way to the overnight hotel in Dumfries.
Day 2: We continue our journey after breakfast travelling through glorious countryside, before reaching the Royal Hotel in Oban for our five-night stay.
Day 3: Today we travel by ferry to the magical Isle of Mull. Upon arrival we drive North to Tobermory, famed for cheerfully painted waterfront buildings and the yachts bobbing in the natural harbour. Whilst here you may wish to visit the distillery or the Mull Museum which is crammed with information about Mull’s past (both payable locally). We continue our day on Mull with a drive South to Duart Castle. For over 700 years it has dominated the view to the Sound of Mull and Loch Linnhe with its huge curtain walls and solid keep. Following our visit here we rejoin the ferry for the return sailing to Oban.
Day 4: This morning we enjoy dramatic mountains, rare beauty and haunting history in the heart of the Highlands as we drive through Glencoe. We pause at the Glencoe Visitor centre to learn about the glen, its wildlife and the families who lived here. We continue our journey to Fort William, situated on the shore of Loch Linnhe below Britain’s highest mountain Ben Nevis. Later we make the short journey to the Ben Nevis distillery for a tour, before returning to Oban.
Day 5: Day at leisure to explore Oban.
Day 6: This morning we visit Inveraray Castle, a romantic fortress and the one-time ancestral seat of the Dukes of Argyll. This landmark features a fairytale façade and gorgeous gardens while the captivating interior boasts an Armoury Hall, State Dining Room and the Tapestry Drawing Room houses fine furniture, artwork and family heirlooms. There will also be free time in Inveraray in the afternoon where you may like to visit the award winning jail attraction where costumed characters portray prisoners from bygone days and act out trials and punishments! (jail entry not included & subject to individual cost and payment).
Day 7: After breakfast, we bid farewell to Oban and make our way to our overnight hotel in Dumfries.
