Fuente Dé & Potes
We follow the valley of the River Deva, passing through the spectacular canyon of the “Desfiladero de la Hermida” until we reach Fuente Dé at the foot of the Picos De Europa. Here you can enjoy a funicular ride up the rocky wall to the spurs of Pena Vieja, from where the views are exceptional, (payable locally). On our return, we visit the pretty mountain village of Potes, with its quaint shops and many restaurants situated by the river.
Cabarceno National Park & Playa de Isla
The Cabarceno National Park awaits us today. Set amidst some of the most spectacular scenery, this is an ideal setting for this wildlife park, where the animals have vast areas to roam. We return via the charming resort of Playa de Isla, which features small sandy coves, dramatic rocky shoreline, plus a nice selection of shops, cafes and bars.
El Sopla Caves & Santillana Del Mar
This morning we visit the caves of El Sopla. A mine train takes us through the mine tunnel of La Isidra to the cave. We walk through the tunnels and rooms of La Gorda, Los Fantasmas, Mirador de Lacuerre. The cave has been adapted for persons with reduced mobility (90% of the route can be made in a wheelchair). After our visit, we travel along the coast road passing the towns of San Vicente de la Barquera and Comillas to the town of Santillana Del Mar. Listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site the village is famous for its medieval houses and cobbled streets.
Today we visit Bilbao. A must see is Frank Gehry’s striking Guggenheim Museum on the banks of the River Nervión. Explore the ‘7 streets’ of the Casco Viejo, (Bilbao’s old quarter), the Gothic cathedral, or maybe take the funicular up Mount Arxtanda for a fantastic view. We then return along the coast, visiting Castro Urdiales, a charming, small maritime village with a beautiful French Gothic-StyIe church, before returning to our hotel.
Cohicillos, Alto Campoo & Roman ruins of Juliobriga
Today we have a full day tour that includes the Cohicillos, the Alto Campoo area and the Roman ruins of Juliobriga. Bordering the dam of Ebro, we arrive at the Puerto del Escudo and descend through the valley of Toranzo to Castañeda.
Day 9: After breakfast, we head for Santander. We have a guided tour of this modern resort, still retaining its character. Beautiful sandy beaches, impressive buildings all combine to make this one of the most popular towns along the coast. Our ferry departs late afternoon – the views of Santander are magnificent as the ship sails out of the harbour. Meals on board the vessel, are by your own arrangement.
