Day 4: We travel via Weardale to the historic market town of Barnard Castle, a historic market town which takes its name from the castle around which it grew. After lunch, we make the short journey to the Bowes Museum – the jewel in the heart of the historic market town of Barnard Castle. This French-style Chateau houses one of Britain’s finest collections of French paintings, textiles and antiques. The museum was purpose built in the 19th century by wealthy businessman John Bowes and his French actress wife Josephine.
