In the Great Gallery a magnificent collection of watercolour and oil paintings can also be admired, with the sheer elegance of the building providing an atmospheric backdrop. The surrounding park & gardens are stunning and provide a beautiful walk, complete with fallow deer & ancient tree groves.
This afternoon we visit Arley Hall Gardens, a place of enormous character, charm and interest. The Gardens, which are amongst the finest in Britain, are outstanding for their vitality, variety and historical interest and are particularly celebrated for the magnificent double herbaceous border- One of Cheshire’s ‘Gardens of Distinction’.
Day 3: The day starts with a drive into the historic city of Chester. The day is then free for you to explore at your leisure. Why not visit the unique 2 storey ‘Rows’, take a gentle stroll to the River Dee, perhaps take a boat trip, or walk around the ancient Roman Walls.
Day 4: This morning we make our way south to Cholmondeley Castle Gardens, home to the Cholmondeley family since the 12th century. The gardens have been extensively developed over the past 60 years and were the lifes work of the Late Lavinia, Dowager Marchioness of Cholmondeley, a talented plantswoman with a passion for plants and gardens. The gardens have become one of the best kept secrets in the north of England with its great diversity and unique plant collections. In the afternoon we have our final visit, to magnificent Tatton Park which is often quoted as England's most complete historic estate, with its fine Georgian mansion full of art treasures and original furnishings. Set amidst more than 50 acres of Tatton Park gardens, at the heart of 1,000 acres of landscaped parkland, the elegant Mansion house at Tatton Park sits in an elevated position. The impressive portico of the South Front dominates the view of the house from the parkland. From the turn of the 18th century the Egerton family made a home on this site. An earlier house was extensively re-modelled in the Neo-Classical style, between 1780 and 1813 by the architects Samuel Wyatt (1737-1807) and Lewis William Wyatt (1777–1853). The rich furnishings of the Tatton Park mansion and its important collection of paintings and books reflect the growing wealth and status of the Egerton family at the end of the 18th and during the 19th centuries. The mansion houses one of the National Trust's finest libraries and an outstanding collection of Gillow's of Lancaster furniture. Add to this the extensive array of domestic offices and servants’ quarters and the Mansion offers a complete view of life in days gone by.
