Day 1: Following your home taxi collection, we join our luxury tour coach and make our way to Kent and the Best Western Plus Burlington Hotel. Upon arrival we enjoy Tea/Coffee and biscuits in the lounge whilst your luggage is delivered to your room.
Day 2: This morning we head to the historic city of Canterbury. One of the most beautiful and historic cities in England, the medieval city centre bustles with famous name stores and exclusive boutiques while the picturesque side streets are home to smaller specialist shops, pubs and restaurants. UNESCO has granted world heritage status to part of the city, including St Martin’s Church, St Augustine’s Abbey and the Cathedral. The Norman cathedral still dominates the skyline as you approach Canterbury; giving 21st century visitors the same sense of awe as their medieval counterparts. The city centre is very compact and is best explored on foot.
After lunch we continue to the East Kent Coast where we visit Sandwich, one of the best preserved medieval towns in England. Steeped in ancient history and with a charming centre full of age-old pubs and beautiful architecture, Sandwich is ideal afternoon stop. Sleepy Sandwich is full of cute cottages and perfectly preserved medieval buildings. Grab coffee and a fresh pastry from the superb No Name Shop and wander to the quayside, eyeing half-timbered houses and antiques shops as you go. There’s no shortage of historic pubs in Sandwich. Step back in time at The Crispin Inn, which was built in 1491. The nearby Kings Arms is equally historic – it was first recorded as The Queen’s Arms during the 1500s and even has Elizabeth I’s coat of arms on the side of the building.
Day 3: Todays excursion takes us to another of the historic Cinque Ports - the town of Hythe. With stunning views of the English Channel to enjoy whilst strolling the Victorian promenade, the historic town of Hythe has plenty to offer. Enjoy a spot of shopping in the unique, independent shops that line the high street; or discover the 10th century church of St Leonard’s. After free time we will enjoy a nostalgic journey on ‘Kent’s Mainline in Miniature’, the Romney, Hythe & Dymchurch Railway, for a scenic, marsh-side meander across the Romney Marsh to Dungeness. We then rejoin the coach and head into East Sussex, to the picturesque town of Rye. It was once one of south-east England’s most important ports and has a rich and interesting history of smuggling and maritime conflict, Whatever your tastes, Rye’s quirky shops, medieval inns and cafés have got you covered.
Day 4: Today is a day of leisure in Folkestone. With masses of Victorian architecture, beautiful waterfront parks and a revitalised harbour, Folkestone has plenty to see and do. The pretty promenade on the cliffs above the beach was landscaped in the mid-19th century. There’s a long lawn, interspersed with ornamental flowerbeds, cafes, the Leas Cliff Hall theatre, a bandstand and monuments like an remembrance arch to the First World War.
Much of what you on the Leas was planned by Decimus Burton, the architect best known for its his work at Kew Gardens and London Zoo. You can catch the cliff lift or take the Zig Zag Path down to the seafront, or pause at the terrace at the top and survey the Channel and the coast of France in the distance. (attractions today subject to individual choice and payment)
