Day 2: We begin our day with a visit to St David’s. Surrounded by some of the finest coastlines in Europe, St David’s is the smallest cathedral city in Britain and is a popular location for pilgrims and artists alike. Adjacent to its 12th century cathedral stands the magnificent ruins of the medieval Bishop’s Palace. This afternoon we enjoy a visit to enchanting Picton Castle. Set within the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park, Picton Castle is a 13th century castle, surrounded by 60 acres of RHS partner gardens. As you explore the house be sure to visit the grand entrance hall, library, great hall, dining room and drawing rooms, before heading downstairs to the castle’s medieval undercroft. No visit to Picton is complete without a wander around the beautiful historic gardens, which includes a recently restored walled garden, fernery, jungle garden and maze. Picton is also home to The Welsh Owl Garden and Zoo, which houses many species of birds of prey, and has recently expanded to include other animals such as its famous otters.
Day 3: This morning we visit the wonderful picturesque town of Laugharne, which was once home to one of Wales’s most famous literary sons, Dylan Thomas and his family. Made famous in his play for voices Under Milk Wood, you can stroll along the main street with its colourful Georgian houses, past the quaint town hall and dramatic Norman castle standing above the beautiful Taf Estuary. Maybe take a visit to the famous Boathouse and see where Dylan and Caitlin Thomas lived with their family and take a peek in Dylan’s writing shed perched above the estuary with its fabulous views. You can also visit St Martins Church and the much visited graves of Dylan and Caitlin.
This afternoon we make our way to Tenby, known for it’s warm atmosphere and fine Victorian houses. Take time to experience the friendly harbour, relax and unwind on one of the three fantastic beaches or simply sit and people watch. For the more adventurous, why not take the twenty minute boat journey to Caldy Island, owned and run by a community of Cistercian monks, open to the public on summer weekdays and Saturdays (crossing is subject to weather and subject to individual cost and payment).
Day 4: Today we visit the lovely market town of Cardigan, one of the oldest towns in Wales set on the banks of the River Towy, with a pedestrianised shopping area and a large modern covered market. We continue our journey through the picturesque Teifi Valley to the National Wool Museum. Here, we enjoy an informative guided tour and let the story of wool, once the most important industry in Wales, weave its magic in this unique working museum.
